Hilarious bungled ATM theft goes viral

A would-be ATM bandit was not even close to pulling off a desperate heist involving a metal chain, a ute and a late night idea.

The unknown man has become a media hit after Queensland Police posted surveillance footage of the failed crime.

The thief arrives at an Ingham Road petrol station in Townsville in a stolen 1997 white Holden Rodeo.

The footage shows him smashing the station door with a concrete block and a mallet. He then heads inside and ties a metal chain around an ATM.

As the luckless man leaves the station, he does not notice that the chain broke while he was rigging it up to the ATM. He quickly flees in his ute, the metal chain trailing along behind him – attached to nothing.

Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Hicks said in a statement: “The only problem for the offender was that he had not realised that his chain wasn’t attached and when he attempted to drive off he left the ATM behind.”

Later, the man returns to the scene of the crime for round two. He swiftly aborts the mission, apparently figuring out that the chain was now too short to wrap around the ATM.
