Mount Etna’s spectacular eruption shuts down airport

This weekend as fiery lava erupted from Europe’s most active Volcano, it forced the closure of Catania airport.

The amazing visual display was accompanied by loud explosions.

Flights were redirected to other airports in Sicily as the ash cloud from Mount Etna made it hazardous for planes.

The current eruption is not expected to be a danger to the local community. The last time lava reached the car park at the Sapienza Refuge was in 1983.

In June 2013 Mount Etna was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
