PM's daughter wins stoush over rental property

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's daughter has been caught in controversy again, with Frances in a legal stoush with a landlord over a broken rental lease.

A single mother has lost her legal battle with Ms Abbott, who withdrew from her rental agreement for the Prahran property after just three days of a one-year lease over security concerns, News Limited reported.

Ms Abbott had members of the Australian Federal Police, Victorian Police and even her father visit the property to have it assessed after saying she didn't feel secure in the apartment.

Despite an offer from Landlady Janine Moussi to make some repairs to the property, Ms Abbott decided to withdraw after finding out security restrictions prevented her from living in a ground-floor flat.

Moussi believed she was entitled to around $1000 after Ms Abbott withdrew from the agreement, and took the case to VCAT.

Ms Abbott claimed that the ad falsely advertised the level of safety and security at the apartment, and that it left her feeling unsafe.

Ms Abbott received her bond back, and the majority of the first month of rent.

Moussi said she was forced to default on her mortgage to cover the rent, and claimed it took eight weeks for her to find a new tenant.
