Goldfields knitters will be out in force this winter as they take on Fossick Handmade's yarn bombing challenge.

Hundreds of knitted or crocheted squares and strips will be patchworked together and made into "tree cosies" to cover the jacaranda trees along Egan Street in time for the Regional Arts Australia Summit: Arts & Edges event from October 16 to 19.

The team at Fossick Handmade held two yarn bombing knitting bees last week as part of the Heart of Gold festival to get people started on the mission.

Co-owner Tina Bryce said dozens of pieces had been donated, but more were needed to cover the estimated 20 trees.

"The community effort that has been going into this already is really encouraging," she said.

"We definitely still need heaps more, so we hope people will carry on with their knitted squares where possible and even try to get some friends involved.

"If you can only knit one or two squares, that's perfect - we will take anything."

Ms Bryce said people were now getting teams together and "adopting" specific trees to create a themed tree cosy for.

"People are really getting on board with it (the challenge) and are coming up with some pretty great ideas," she said.

Donations of squares and strips will be taken until early October, providing the team with time to patch them all together and cover the trees.
