Jamie Gao's 'dark past' revealed

Details have emerged about student Jamie Gao, allegedly murdered in a drug deal gone wrong.

Former detectives Glen McNamara and Roger Rogerson have been charged with the 20-year-old's murder.

Gao had reportedly faced court only a week before his alleged shooting, charged with kidnapping and assault.

"A lot of his friends didn't know that he did drugs, we were really shocked about it," a close friend told Fairfax.

The student was accused of forcing a young man into a car and detaining him with two other men to get information about a relationship breakdown in January, according to the report.

Gao's girlfriend yesterday visited the site where the student's body was found by police and threw flowers into the ocean.

Friends were said to have been "devastated" by Gao's death.

The murky history was revealed as police denied reports Gao was an informant for them.

McNamara and Rogerson have been accused of shooting Gao in a storage locker before stuffing his body into a surfboard bag and dumping it in the ocean.

Police say security vision from a storage facility shows the men and their alleged victim walking in to make a drug deal, but only the two older men walk out, carrying a large bag.

Police will allege Gao was carrying three kilograms of ice to a pre-arranged meeting with the former detectives in Padstow on May 20.

Rogerson was arrested on Tuesday by police and was charged later in the day with murder.

Rogerson will be back in court on July 22 - the same day as his co-accused, Glen McNamara.
