Minister backs safer fishing

Minister for Fisheries Ken Baston and Andrew Jarvis from the Albany Boating and Offshore Fishing Club at Salmon Holes.

Minister for Fisheries Ken Baston has thrown his support behind rock safety fishing in the Great Southern ahead of the popular Easter fishing period at Salmon Holes.

Members of the Albany Offshore Boating and Fishing Club will be at Salmon Holes over the long weekend to help visiting anglers with safety precautions.

Keen fishers will be shown how to properly tie on to the rock anchor points provided, the most appropriate footwear for rock fishing and will be given free loan life jackets from Good Friday.

Mr Baston said it was his first visit to the notorious Salmon Holes.

“It was an education for myself — watching people fishing there you quickly realise how dangerous it can be,” he said.

“Members of the local fishing club giving their time to hand out loan life jackets is a marvellous initiative.”

Mr Baston implored all fishers to use the rock bolts at Salmon Holes.

Andrew Jarvis from the Albany Boating and Offshore Fishing Club said they were hoping to save lives.

“With the influx of visitors over this period, especially to fish on the rocks at the Salmon Holes, it is important to show safety,” he said.
