Criminal activity at The Gatwick Hotel

It has long been considered Melbourne's most dangerous hotel, and 7 News can reveal the shocking criminal reality of life within Fitzroy Street's notorious Gatwick Hotel.

A Seven News investigation has uncovered that seventy-four offences were committed at the hotel in the past year alone, including kidnapping, serious assault and aggravated burglary.

Detective Sergeant Ed Logonder says drug overdoses and death have sadly come to characterise life at The Gatwick.

"There's no hiding the fact that there's been murders, violent assaults, there have been drug overdoses there," he says.

Many inhabitants are drawn to the big white boarding house at 34 Fitzroy street for the cheap rent and a 'good deal', and simply accept the inherent dangers that come with it.

Det. Sgt. Logonder admits the criminal element tends to gravitate towards the hotel.

"It's a dangerous place and I'm not aware of many other places that have a reputation like The Gatwick Hotel," he says.

But Det. Sgt. Logonder warns that crime is not limited to within the notorious hotel.

"These documented crimes only account for incidents that have taken place within the walls of the Gatwick Hotel.”

“They don't include the many associated crimes in the immediate area.”
