VC recipient rejects Army departure reports

Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith has rejected newspaper reports he's leaving the Defence Force to embark on a business career.

Corporal Roberts-Smith says he's planning to take long-service leave this year to spend time with his family.

"I have not resigned from the Special Air Service Regiment and remain a member of the Australian Army who is proud to continue serving with the SASR," Corporal Roberts-Smith said in a statement this afternoon.

"Over the course of 18 years in the Army, I have accumulated a substantial amount of leave and plan to take some of that leave this year."

He says he is disappointed by the reports, and feels it's necessary to reaffirm his commitment to his duties in the SASR, the Army and the Defence Force.

Corporal Roberts-Smith denied he would "quit or walk away" as reports suggested, but said like any member of the ADF he would move on when the time comes.
