Mid West schools showcase turns 21

The 2012 Iluka Showcase presented an abundance of talent from Mid West school students.

This year marked the 21st anniversary of the Geraldton and Regional Schools Arts Festival and once again delivered a school spectacular to be proud of.

From song and dance to classic guitar and a live band, the audience was taken on a journey around the world and to decades past, during the two-hour affair.

A full house of proud parents and community members gathered last Friday night at Queens Park Theatre to watch more than 200 students perform after a year of rehearsals.

Holland Street School opened the show with a vibrant performance of One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful.

Alyssa Hearne, Ava McInerheney and Coco Shaw followed on classical guitar.

Taught under the guidance of Sara Baldock, the trio of primary school students performed at a level exceeding their age.

Mount Tarcoola Primary School brought culture and diversity to the stage with four traditional Indonesian dances, complete with striking costumes and make-up.

John Willcock College’s flute quintet performed an ensemble of popular music, including Harry Potter and the Pink Panther.

A debut Showcase performance from Rangeway Primary School’s live band the Grommets was a hit.

The nine-piece band’s rendition of Wild Thing was paired with backing footage from hit television program Countdown.

Geraldton Senior College’s Owen James blew the audience away with his performance of Andy McKee’s Drifting on guitar.

The talented Year 12 student won the recent Sunshine Festival Acoustic Guitar Competition with the technically-challenging piece.

St John’s Primary School delivered an entertaining medley of songs inspired by New York City.

The buzzing performance featured air guitar, rap and break dancing.

Mitchell Bernath continued the run of quality acts with his hypnotic robotic dance moves inspired by Transformers.

Geraldton Senior College students brought Alice in Wonderland to the QPT stage with a contemporary dance item.

Mount Tarcoola Primary School student Tyra Austin captivated the audience with her vocal performance of Only Hope by Mandy Moore.

Allendale Primary School transported the audience to the 1960s with a spirited performance of Hairspray.

Students brought the hit musical to life with props and costumes reflective of the era.

Waggrakine Primary School students gained a roaring response from the crowd with their dance performance inspired by the film Step Up.

Sixty students impressed with hip-hop dance moves choreographed to smooth beats.

Geraldton Senior College student Celine Nugent delivered a solid vocal performance of No One by Alicia Keys.

The Rangeway Rockets concluded the show with an impressive skipping rope routine that left audience members gasping in awe.

John Willcock College student Chelsea Bidwell brought warmth and humour to her role as compere.

The entertaining 2012 show marked the first offering from organiser Jo Corlett.
