An 83-year-old man is believed to have been killed after a fire tore through a unit at a retirement community north of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to the Morayfield Rd complex at Burpengary about 9pm on Monday following reports of a fire in one of the units.

When crews arrived they found the unit well alight, with residents from neighbouring units evacuated.

After the fire was extinguished, police found a single body inside.

While the body has not been formally identified, police believe it is an 83-year-old male resident who has not been accounted for.

A crime scene has since been declared at the site by police, with detectives investigating the cause of the fire.

They are calling on anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward.
