5 ideas for amazing mum-friendly solo holidays from Lucy Chesterton

1. ISLAND HOPPING IN HAWAII / OUTRIGGER WAIKIKI BEACH + KONA

The smart mums are booking a family-friendly hotel (I recently stayed at Outrigger Waikiki Beach) and leaving ahead of the family for a week of blissful solo vacay, taking advantage of adult-only areas and spa treatments. Then, as an option, the rest of the family join you a week later after you’re all rejuvenated. You don’t have to deal with the kids on the flight (let your partner or your in-laws bring them), you get to de-stress, but you also have zero guilt since you also get some quality time with everyone. Win-win. Hawaii also ofers the chance to island-hop, so you can go via internal flights on Hawaiian airlines to places like Kona and get two hols for (basically) the price of one.

2. PEACE AND QUIET IN TASMANIA / MARIA ISLAND WALK

As a destination, Tassie is the ultimate in de-stress because it’s a gorgeous natural landscape, plus has luxe hotels, gourmet food and basically caters to tired mums!

I have done the Maria Island Walk and it’s the perfect getaway. It’s a glamping experience so you are not roughing it, and you get absolute silence, stunning natural landscapes, and 5-star gourmet food COOKED FOR YOU every night, with matching wines. Everything is done for you, so you can totally bliss out. Other options for similar experiences are Kangaroo Valley in NSW or the Ocean Lodge in South Australia.

For more visit Maria Island Walk, Southern Ocean Lodge and One and Only Resorts.

3. TAKE TO THE SEAS ON A CRUISE/ SERENITY ADULTS ONLY CRUISE

The best way to take a break is to hit the high seas on a cruise where there are no kids allowed! If not a whole solo cruise, at least take one where you can get away from it all in the adults-only zones. Carnival Cruises has Serenity, where you could not be further from it all. You’ll find yourself with sea breezes, swaying hammocks and, of course, a nearby bar. It’s the place to get done the kind of stuff you just can’t seem to do anywhere else — reconnect with your partner, finish that book, lavish some spa time, or do absolutely, blissfully, nothing at all.

4. GET ON ‘FIJI TIME’ in FIJI/ VOMO

Somewhere like the Outrigger Fiji is another option to give you adults-only solo vacays in a spot where your kids could join you IF you wanted. But if you don’t, go to VOMO!! Vomo FIji is the ultimate in relaxation with its friendly faces and laidback lifestyle. You’ll be on ‘Fiji time’ before you know it. Seriously, Vomo is the best. BLISS.

5. BEACH BREAK/ COOGEE BEACH OF A LOCAL BEACH ‘STAYCATION’

Sometimes you just want something simple and staying local makes the whole planning and prepping much easier (and more affordable). Simply step over a few suburbs from wherever you are and take a staycation- I had one at Coogee Beach Plaze and came back a way better mother!
