Three men were killed in a crash involving two vehicles in Brampton on Thursday, and the driver of one of the vehicles has been arrested in connection with the collision, Peel police say.

Police said the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on Bovaird Drive near Chinguacousy Road.

Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said the vehicle carrying the men slammed into a pole and all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Bell-Morena told reporters later at a scrum that officers originally believed it was a single vehicle crash into a pole. When officers arrived at the scene, however, they were made aware that a second vehicle was involved but had fled the scene.

Police found the second vehicle abandoned at a nearby gas station.

The exact circumstances of the crash are still being investigated.

"Speeds were a major factor here. For the (second) vehicle to be in the condition that it's in, it would have been travelling at an unacceptably high rate of speed." he said.

The driver of the second vehicle left the scene but was later found by police and taken into custody, he said. Charges have not been laid.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have dashboard camera footage from the area around the time of the crash to contact police.

Bovaird Drive was closed between Fletchers Creek Boulevard and Chinguacousy Road, but has since reopened.
