Driver charged after truck hits school
A truck driver has been charged with allegedly possessing drugs after his vehicle caused extensive damage when it drove through a major city intersection before coming to a stop in the rubble of a school building.
The smash up happened at the intersection of the Nuwarra and Newbridge roads in Moorebank, Sydney, about 1.15pm on Saturday.
The truck and trailer – which was loaded with soil – struck 19 vehicles before continuing across the footpath and into the carpark of a church and a primary school.
NSW Police confirmed the truck continued through the grounds only stopping when it hit a classroom.
The 21-year-old driver was trapped within his cabin for almost 40 minutes before he was released by Fire and Rescue NSW officers.
He was taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he remains after getting treated for minor facial and hand injuries.
NSW Police have since charged the man with a Field Court Attendance Notice (FCAN) for the alleged possession of illegal drugs.
Police will allege officers found methamphetamine and an ice pipe within the truck cabin after the crash.
The man’s licence was also immediately suspended.
He will also undergo mandatory testing, with police confirming that further charges could be laid once those results are received.
Meanwhile, two other people were also taken to hospital following the incident.
A 33-year-old man was released on Sunday after being treated for soft-tissue injuries, while his wife remains in hospital under observation as a precaution.
The truck will also undergo mechanical examination while the building is being checked for structural damage.
Photos from the scene show a smashed up window at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary in Moorebank, with a large white truck sitting in rubble.
Paramedics checked six others at the scene as a precaution.
