Coronavirus Victoria: More than 100 schools, childcare centres close as cases soar

More than 100 school and childcare centres in Victoria have been closed as the state continues to record daily spikes in positive cases.

It’s a huge jump from the 12 schools in the state that were closed on Monday.

Victoria’s Department of Education and Training released the list of schools, childcare centres and TAFE campuses that are closed, but noted not all of the closures were related to COVID-19.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced 484 new cases on Wednesday, with suggestion the daily numbers were stabilising in recent days now thrown out the window.

Trinity College in Colac was closed on Monday after a student at the high school was revealed as a close contact worker at the Australian Lamb Company abattoir in Colac, where an outbreak doubled from six to 12 cases in 24 hours.

Four new cases of COVID-19 have been reported at Nino Early Learning Adventures' Bundoora site, including three educators and one child, bringing the location total to seven, Nine News reported.

Nine also reported Dandenong High School will be closed from today for at least 72 hours after a student tested positive to coronavirus.

"Further investigations are being undertaken this morning by DHHS, the school and DET to identify whether any staff or students are required to self-isolate, and to determine any further actions required to reduce the risk of infection," a DET spokesperson said.

Masks mandatory for school children 12 or older

It comes as students aged 12 or older attending school will be required to wear a mask from Thursday.

Education Minister James Merlino said 1.2 million single-use masks would be distributed to state, Catholic and independent schools.

An order of 1.37 million reusable fabric masks also has been made, with the Department of Education to be among the first to receive a batch.

"Any student who needs a mask will be provided with one," Mr Merlino said.
