1 dead after quintuple shooting in Etobicoke, police say
A man was killed and four other men were injured in a shooting outside a north Etobicoke high school late Sunday, Toronto police say.
The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. in the rear parking lot area of North Albion Collegiate Institute, near the corner of Mount Olive Drive and Kipling Avenue.
At a news conference Monday, Det.-Sgt. Phil Campbell said roughly 15-20 people had gathered in the lot after playing soccer throughout the afternoon and evening.
"They were really just socializing, enjoying the fresh air," he told reporters.
That's when two suspects got out of a black or dark-coloured pickup truck and opened fire on the group, Campbell said. The truck, which he said was a "newer model," was seen speeding away from the scene of the shooting.
Responding officers found five men with gunshot wounds. Campbell said all of the victims were between 40 and 60 years old.
A man in his 50s later died in hospital, he said. Another of the victims has what Campbell described as life-altering injuries.
Speaking alongside Campbell, Supt. Ron Taverner said police are putting up a command post nearby the scene and encouraged anyone with information or video that could be useful to investigators to come forward.
2 earlier shootings in same area of Etobicoke
The quintuple shooting Sunday was preceded by two earlier shootings in the same area of the city that police believe were random.
The first happened just after 10 p.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of Martin Grove Road, Taverner said. A 20-year-old man was shot multiple times. He was taken to hospital and is expected to survive, according to Taverner.
"We believe he was a totally innocent victim," Taverner told reporters.
Then, at around 2:40 a.m. Sunday, a 14-year-old boy was "randomly shot" as he walked out of an apartment building in the area of Richgrove Drive and Martin Grove Road, Taverner said. He remains in hospital.
"This is very, very concerning obviously to us and the community," he said, adding that it is too early in the investigation to say whether any of the shootings over the weekend are connected or part of a larger pattern.
"It's very disturbing. I don't think there is anyone in this room or in this community that isn't outraged."
The Toronto District School Board said North Albion would be closed to students and staff Monday, with students moving to online learning instead.
Sunday's fatal shooting was the second to happen in the parking lot of a school in the last several weeks. On May 22, a man in his 40s was killed and another man in his 20s was injured after gunfire erupted in the parking lot of Settler's Green Public School in Mississauga.
