Husband who bit off wife's nose escapes jail

A jealous husband who bit off his wife's nose in a fit of rage has escaped a prison sentence.

Peter Veljanoski, 59, walked free from the County Court today after being handed a two-year jail term suspended for two years.

The father-of-three threatened his wife of 40 years, Strebrena, with a knife before wrapping a hose around her neck at their Newport home in March this year, News.com reports.

He then bit off her nose as a neighbour attempted to intervene in the dispute.

Veljanoski pleaded guilty to one count of recklessly causing injury.

Judge Barbara Cotterell said Veljanoski had become 'obsessively jealous' of his wife, and believed she was having an affair.

She accepted Veljanoski was suffering from a 'delusional disorder' when the attack occurred, and he is now being treated for mental illness, News.com reports.

His wife required plastic surgery, but the court heard the couple had reconciled and are now living together.
