Man on the run arrested after epic Melbourne police chase

A man who rammed two police cars after an alleged drug deal in Melbourne last month, has been arrested after two weeks on the run.

Police had been hunting Sean Paul Murphy since he escaped arrest on March 29.

He was caught a second time on Friday after officers were called to investigate a suspicious loiterer, police say.

The 26-year-old is being interviewed by police and is expected to be charged with conduct endangering life, assault police, resisting arrest and several drug and weapon offences, before facing a bail hearing on Friday afternoon.

Murphy fled an initial police arrest a fortnight ago, following a dramatic high speed chase through the city.

During last month's car chase, motorists spotted three police cars chasing Murphy's dark coloured BMW speeding on the wrong side of the Princes Highway at Flemington, saying the chase looked like a scene from the notorious video game Grand Theft Auto.

The driver reportedly had blood on his face.

Bullet holes were seen in the front windscreen, a witness said, and the driver was screaming hysterically, with blood dripping from his face.

"The windshield is broken, it looks like there were gun shots through the windshield (and) the gentleman was bleeding quite profusely," witness Geordie Barker told 3AW radio.

“It was absolutely mental.

“It was like a scene out of a movie."

Police intercepted the vehicle at North Melbourne and the man ran away during an attempted arrest.

Uniformed police initially approached Murphy near the intersection of Queen Street and A'Beckett Street after a tip-off from the public about a drug deal taking place.

As officers tried to arrest him the driver fled the scene in his BMW, ramming two police vehicles off the road, however, nobody was seriously injured.

Eye witnesses told police they saw the driver throw money from the car during the chase, before eventually abandoning the car and catching a taxi from Spencer Street.

On the afternoon of the chase, police located the abandoned BMW, outside a hotel in Downie St, in the city's CBD, where they uncovered wads of cash, along with other items wrapped in white plastic bags.
