Bill busted! Shorten caught on phone while driving

Damning video has emerged of opposition leader Bill Shorten using his mobile phone while driving in Melbourne.

Video obtained by the Herald Sun shows the Labor leader holding his phone with both hands for at least six seconds while driving along Kings Way at 40km/h on August 23, the paper reports.

Mr Shorten told the newspaper that he could not remember why he was on his phone, but said he could not rule out texting.

“Like most drivers, I always try to do the right thing,” Mr Shorten said.

“But there’s no doubt that using your phone while driving is the wrong thing to do — there’s no excuse for it. I shouldn’t have done it and won’t do it again.”

The witness who filmed the video said he decided to film the vehicle as the motorist was swerving between lanes in front of him and driving at a frustratingly slow speed.

It was only as he passed the car while filming that he realised it was Mr Shorten behind the wheel.

The witness said he decided to come forward after hearing about an accident in which Mr Shorten sideswiped “a number” of cars after spilling coffee on his lap while driving last month.

The penalty for using a mobile phone while driving in Victoria is a $443 fine and four demerit points.
