Students dared to surf on Melbourne train

FIRST ON 7: A schoolgirl caught on video train surfing in Melbourne this morning has admitted it was a stupid thing to do.

The teenager was with a friend when they were filmed clinging to the back of a train bound for Williamstown.

A 7News camera crew was working on the North Williamstown Station this morning when they spotted the pair leaving the last carriage of the train and combing onto its rear coupler for the journey to Williamstown.

7News caught up with one of the students as she left school at lunchtime.

“It was kind of a bit of a dare,” she said.

“I don’t usually do it.

“Yeah, I know how dangerous it is, it was stupid.”

The girl said she is mortified by the fuss her actions have caused, but police said the consequences could have been far worse than the embarrassment.

“They could have fallen off into the path of another train, they could have fallen off with another train coming behind, they can’t see what’s in front of them because they’re at the back of the train, so it’s just incredibly dangerous and stupid,” Inspector Karl Curran said.

Metro Trains CEO Andrew Lezala is pleading with people not to take the risk.

“Train surfers and people riding on couplers don’t realise that the dynamics of the train over the sets of points can throw people off,” he said.

“They’re risking their lives and this is just stupid, they just shouldn’t do it, please don’t do it.”
