Twinkling toes could help Wirrpanda
David Wirrpanda's potential stint on television show Dancing with the Stars might help him reach peak fitness, according to East Perth coach Tony Micale.
"We haven't sighted Wirra yet," Micale joked at the WAFL season launch at Subiaco Oval this morning.
"Hopefully he will turn up on Friday night."
The West Coast premiership player has produced a steady pre-season campaign with the Royals but his playing future remains in some doubt if he commits to the reality TV show.
But Micale saw some benefits in the 31-year-old working on his dance steps.
"I think they have to practice four hours a day," he said. "That will be good for him."
The veteran coach predicted this could be one of the closest seasons in recent memory with only Peel, who have lost a host of senior players, unlikely to challenge for the finals.
"You will go to WAFL games this season and not be sure who will win," Micale said.
East Perth will travel to Fremantle Oval to take on defending premiers South Fremantle in the season opener on Friday night.
Peel start the season at home against Claremont on Saturday, Perth will host East Fremantle and West Perth will play their recent finals nemesis Swan Districts at Arena Joondalup.
