Troubled Eagle walks out of WAFL match

The career of West Coast forward Murray Newman is in serious jeopardy after he stormed out of the ground at quarter-time while playing for Swan Districts on Saturday.

The 19-year-old had played a reasonable first quarter against Claremont at Claremont Oval but walked straight into the rooms at the first break, grabbed his bag and left without speaking to Swans staff. Swans went on to score an upset victory over the league-leading Tigers.

West Coast football operations manager Neale Daniher was seen speaking to Swans officials at half-time, but the reason behind his disappearance was still a mystery.

Swans officials later reported that Newman had advised the WAFL club he had a family matter to address. West Coast put out a statement on Sunday saying they were aware of Newman's exit and the "club will meet with Murray in the coming days to discuss the circumstances behind this incident".

Newman is on fragile ground at the Eagles after attracting a grievous bodily harm charge in an alleged nightclub incident last November.

He then returned out of shape at this year’s pre-season training, being beaten in an early run by 44-year-old coach John Worsfold.

Newman was drafted by the Eagles at pick No.23 in the 2011 National draft and played four games in his debut season.

Meanwhile, Swans battled on a man down to score a 39-point win over the Tigers.

The Swans kicked the first two goals of the game through Charlie Cameron and Tony Notte and would lead at every change on their way to a 16.14 (110) to 10.11 (71) victory.

Notte led the way with five goals in a dominant Swans forward line, with Aaron Elari, Wayde Twomey and West Cost rookie Jamie Bennell leading the disposals for their side with 23.

Jake Murphy was impressive for the Tigers, who lost just their second game of the season, while Sandover medallist Luke Blackwell didn't miss a beat in his return from injury with 30 disposals.

The two sides were locked in an arm-wrestle in the early stages, with neither able to break out to a solid lead.

But Swans hit the deck running in the second term, kicking five goals to one in the first 15 minutes of the term.

Tigers spearhead Chad Jones kicked three goals in the third term to drag his side back in it, but the Swans responded in fine fashion, extending their eight-point lead at three-quarter time to 39 by the final siren.
