Sumich 'gutted' to miss out on Eagles job

Peter Sumich said there was no hiding his disappointment at missing out on the head coaching job at West Coast - and questioned the club's board and discipline.

The Eagles overlooked the club legend in favour of Hawthorn assistant Adam Simpson when announcing John Worsfold's successor yesterday.

"I'm gutted, there is no doubt about that and I'm disappointed I didn't get the job," the Dockers assistant told 6PR.

"I understand the club's move and we all move on and I have just signed a new contract with Fremantle and I am looking forward to that going forward.

"I gave it my best shot." He added: "I suppose the board, they were thinking a little bit different to probably a lot of people and they make those decisions.

"I just worry when boards make decisions, especially when there aren't too many footy people on them."

Asked by show host Brad Hardie what he could have brought to the Eagles which he didn't have when he left for Fremantle two years ago, Sumich said: "The discipline side of things I see with West Coast at the moment, on and off the field, I've got no doubt that some of the players, in my opinion ... just need to be brought in line a little bit.

"I read a tweet by Ash Smith, and I don't mind saying it, he tweeted he's sick of seeing purple, go the Hawks ... I just thought to myself, 'jeez Ash', those little things, those discipline things, you need to bring in line at the club."

Sumich, who said it was the third post he had applied for after Essendon and Richmond, said he still had a "burning ambition" to be a senior coach.
