Dennis Cometti: Eagles loss typical of season

Dennis Cometti: Luck evades Dockers
Opportunity knocked but the door didn't open.

The West Coast Eagles left the finals race in disappointing fashion at Etihad Stadium yesterday.

Fitting, really, that they were mown down by a team with far less lofty ambitions starting the season.

Somehow it seemed an almost predicable end considering all that had gone before.

Which isn't to say the Eagles team that took the field bore any resemblance to what the club's brains trust would have envisaged on their white board just 18 rounds ago.

It many respects it has been the season from hell.

Hell, I had them playing in the grand final.

Injuries played a part, sure, but this Eagles model seemed lacklustre, regardless.

Even the best loved Eagle of them all, John Worsfold, found himself too unstable to provide stability.

The coach took us on a remarkable detour concerning his future when the present was slipping away.

Yet, I'm sure most Eagles fans remain keen to see him continue into his 13th season in 2014.

If John Wayne were alive most would still have him earmarked as the perfect fit for the title role in "The John Worsfold Story" ... right down to the initials.

But a sticking point might be the length of any new Worsfold contract.

Anything longer than two seasons could be a tad too generous.

Some key pieces have one more quality season left in them but a next year like this year could make for a very unhappy club.
