Police dog Geoffrey adds bite to team

Bunbury's crime-fighting canine and his handler have racked up more than 20 solo arrests in an eventful first six months.

Const. Jake Carruthers and police dog Geoffrey – who turns three in August – have caught 26 offenders since December 2012 and helped in about 50 more arrests.

The tag-team came fresh from training in Perth and made their first collar in Bunbury before officially been rostered on.

“I’m loving it down here, they’re using Geoffrey and I for everything,” Const. Carruthers said.

“Everyone has a good understanding of what we can do – we’re being utilised to our full extent.”

Const. Carruthers said the highlight of his and Geoffrey’s first six months was last week’s capture and arrest of a 33-year-old man involved with a police chase, believed to be linked to two men being terrorised at gunpoint.

“The accused was found hiding in a Carey Park backyard – Geoffrey sniffed him out,” Const. Carruthers said.

Geoffrey has also put himself in danger in the line of duty.

“There was an incident when we were called out and Geoffrey was almost punched in the nose,” Const. Carruthers said.
