Youth Week action

Rockingham youth David Crosse, 15, Brix Ottaway, 18, and Patrick Marshall, 12, ready to make comic strips on their iPads.

Kwinana will kick start National Youth Week with a splash on Friday as teenagers jump into a week full of activities, starting with the Zone Youth Space pool party.

The jam-packed week will offer young people, aged 12 to 25, fun and educational activities across Kwinana and Rockingham from April 4 to April 13.

Kwinana Zone Youth Space youth programs officer Nigel Morrison said Youth Week was a chance for teenagers to express themselves and show off their talents.

Mr Morrison said along with the pool party and onsie party, the Zone was holding a Community Open Day on April 12 to showcase what Kwinana youth create at the centre.

“Many of the exhibits and activities will be organised and run by young people who are a part of a range of different programs such as Urban GATE, Change It Up, Youth Advisory Council, and the Konnect Media Group,” he said.

“Having community members attend gives these young people an audience to display their positive input into the Kwinana community.”

Mr Morrison said the Kwinana Youth Services team would also provide their “Totally Tuesday” workshops at high schools to continue building positive relationships with schools and young people.

Kwinana deputy mayor Peter Feasey said the week provided the City with an opportunity to celebrate the positive contributions and achievements of youth.

“Over 18 per cent of Kwinana’s population is between 12 and 24 years so it is important to celebrate who they are and share their contributions through events such as the Zone Open Day,” he said.

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said youth could showcase their artistic abilities at creative free workshops throughout the week including, creating comics with apps on an iPad, making ceramic lanterns and drawing cartoons.
