Newman Airport's $1.6m upgrade includes helipad
Newman Airport will receive $827,000 from the State Government to upgrade general aviation services.
The funding is from the Royalties for Regions program and the Department of Transport’s Regional Airports Development Scheme.
Shire of East Pilbara manager of airport services Leon Burger said the money would be used to extend the area on which aircraft are parked, refuelled and serviced.
A helicopter base for the airport will also be built.
He said the project would cost $1.6 million, half of which would be funded by the Shire of East Pilbara.
“Over the last year general aviation traffic and activity has increased exponentially,” Mr Burger said.
“It’s become a very busy (air)port as far as RFDS becoming a prevalent service and regular transfer base.
“In addition it’s a prominent helicopter base.
“The location of Newman means light aircraft come by to stop over and refuel and aerial survey planes supporting the resource industry regularly use the apron.”
