Bushfire season prompts reminder

A fire 35km west of Laverton last month was a timely reminder to residents of the Goldfields bushfires are not limited to Victoria and New South Wales.

The fire, which burned bushland very close to the road network, did not cause significant damage to any homes, but did show the arid conditions in the region are prone to fires.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said locals must be especially vigilant to protect their homes, even in areas not traditionally affected by bushfire.

“The bushfire season is shaping up to be another long and challenging one for our firefighters, and they cannot protect the community alone,” Commissioner Gregson said.

“We all need to ensure that we do our part to reduce the risk of bushfires. “People should create a 20m building protection zone around their home that includes clearing the area of rubbish, long dry grass, bark and other materials that may catch fire.”

The fire outside Laverton also provided a warning as to how it can affect the road way, which is covered in FESA’s bushfire guide.

“If you have been trapped by fire, find a suitable place to park the car and shelter from the intense radiant heat,” the bushfire guide states.
