Chance to tour weather centre

Want to know how weather forecasts and measurements are carried out?

If so, you can find out at the Esperance office of the Bureau of Meteorology, which is opening its doors to the public next Monday and Friday as part of National Science Week.

Meteorological technical officer Cliff Spencer said tours of the facility would be held on both days.

“It’s just a general tour of the Met office to tell people what we do up here, what our role is and it will give them a chance to ask us any questions,” he said.

“We observe the weather by monitoring instruments and releasing weather balloons to record temperatures at different altitudes.

“Our main role is surface and upper air weather observations.”

He said the helium-filled balloons were tracked by radar, recoding data, and drifted up to a ceiling of about 28km before exploding.
