Brave Warriors deliver a scare

Pumas breathed a sigh of relief after a stuttering finish to Wednesday night’s Senior One women’s contest against Chapman Valley.

The Warriors unleashed a barrage of shots from outside the arch to get within two points of the top-placed side.

Game high-scorer Alicia Jones (25 points) flared up a second-half resurgence.

The guard scored two of her six triples to claw back Pumas’ 44-27 half-time lead.

But Pumas held firm in defence to undo the Valley’s screens.

A lay-up from Lacy McDonald gave Pumas some breathing space at 62-53.

Aliesha Cobley then sent the Warriors to the canvas with three consecutive baskets as time ticked away.

In the earlier men’s contest, Chapman Valley’s 66-57 win over Pumas was marred by a barrage of tech fouls.

Five in total were dished out to the Valley, with tall Warrior Kris Clarkson ejected from the playing arena.

Pumas, without star shooter Greg Brown, trailed the premiershipholders 39-26 at the break.

Warriors forward Aaron Ralph top scored with 19 points, while Ray Evans and Andrew Horsman both tallied 16 points for Pumas.

Chapman Valley men and women both travel to Dongara tomorrow to play Hawks.

Stateside men spiced up the finals race by dispatching Trades 76-55 on Tuesday night.

The Scorpions leapfrogged the Tigers to third on the ladder.

Both teams, along with second placed Pumas, are tied on 10 points.

A game-high 23-point haul from Leisha Cooper inspired the Tigers women to a 57-39 win over Stateside in the women’s Senior One contest.
