80s fashion inspires spring style

Anyone confused about fashion for the coming warmer months should take inspiration from 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner, Melbourne Spring Fashion Week's first night of runway shows suggests.

Huge hair - some crimped - exaggerated shoulder pads and metallic space-age fabrics stormed through the Melbourne Town Hall last night in the nine collections on display.

There was also classic 1960s tailoring with a modern spin from designer Dhini, deconstructed suiting using ruching and draping, and only a hint of floral to indicate a change of season.

Sky-high stilettos caused havoc for one catwalk model who was forced to carry an offending shoe in her hand as she hobbled down the runway.

Star of the show, Melbourne model Lucy McIntosh, dazzled in a split Alice Euphemia shift dress and thigh-hugging gold boots.

The eclectic local designer incorporated 80s party themes into a collection that celebrated lace, fluorescent patterning and dressing up.

Colours traversed the runway palette, from lime to mustard to bright white, with designers working a rainbow of hues into fabrics that included leather, silk, plastic, mesh and nylon.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week runs until September 5.
