Pub evacuated after structural scare

Hundreds of people were evacuated from a popular Perth pub last night after the building apparently developed a structural fault.

The Flying Scotsman in Mt Lawley closed about 7.30pm after staff spotted damage.

Various tweets, accompanied by photographs, say the upper floor of the Flying Scotsman pub in Mt Lawley felt like it was giving way at the launch of the Beaufort Street Festival.

Hundreds of patrons poured out onto the street below following the incident, which saw bottles falling off shelves, according to accounts.

The duty manager, who declined to be named, said staff reacted quickly.

"We suffered some structural damage and we evacuated the pub, it's what we've been trained to do," he said. "It was still the dinner crowd, so it wasn't too busy."

While he refused to reveal the nature of the damage, witnesses said a support pillar inside the pub had cracked that caused the upstairs floor to shift.

The pub's owners were due to inspect the damage last night.

The pub and its upstairs cocktail bar are popular destinations on the Beaufort Street strip, attracting big crowds on Wednesdays and weekends.
