Trump says he was being sarcastic when he claimed Obama created ISIS, well 'sort of'

US presidential candidate Donald Trump has unleashed on President Barack Obama, calling him "weak" just days after claiming he was the "founder of ISIS".

Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump told the packed house his earlier ISIS founder claims were supposed to be sarcastic, but blamed the media for failing to see the joke.

"Of course I'm being sarcastic," he said.

"I said, 'he's the MVP, he's going to collect the MVP award'.

"And these dishonest media people, the most dishonest people, said 'did he mean that?'."

Obama 'founded' ISIS: Trump claims

But the "sort of" apology didn't last long with Trump again launching into President Obama, labelling him "so bad".

"I'm being sarcastic, but not that sarcastic to be honest with you," he said to loud cheers.

"He let this happen.

"They had eight states, eight countries, now they have 28 states … they are expanding.

"They should call (Obama) an enabler."

The new comments come just two days after Trump also said "crooked Hillary Clinton" was ISIS's co-founder.

Trump has long blamed Obama and his former secretary of state - Clinton - for pursuing Mideast policies that created a power vacuum in Iraq that was exploited by IS, another acronym for the group.

The White House has declined to comment on Trump's claims.
