Bystanders lift car to save man

A man is recovering in hospital after being pulled unconscious from beneath a burning car following a motorcycle accident.

Traveling along a Utah highway, 21-year-old Brandon Wright laid his motorcycle down in order to avoid colliding with a BMW pulling out of a nearby parking lot.

Mr Wright and his motorcycle both ended up beneath the car, where the motorcycle's fuel lines were severed.

Bystanders watched on as the car and the bike both caught fire, with an unconscious Mr Wright still trapped near the flames.

Local police officer Sgt. Jason Olsen, who saw the accident, told a fellow officer to grab a jack to lift the car up, but saw the bystanders already in action before he even had a chance.

"I realized that these citizens had already organized and were just going to manually lift (the car) up", he told CNN.

The extraordinary video shows men and women in suits, hard hats and with backpacks still on their backs working together to lift the 1800kg BMW.

As flames and smoke engulfed the vehicles, the 12 bystanders finally lifted the car enough for another man to reach beneath and pull Mr Wright's limp body to safety.

Assistant chief of Logan police Jeff Curtis has nothing but praise for the quick thinking good Samaritans.

It was a "life-saving move that the Logan Police Department does not want to go unnoticed", he said. "It speaks volumes to what people will do in a tragic situation to help another person out."

Firefighters arrived quickly on the scene to extinguish the two vehicles.

Mr Wright is recovering after suffering broken bones, cuts and burns.

Police are now looking for the city council to officially recognize the Samaritans' bravery.
