He is not even old enough to vote but Perth Modern School student Johnson Ye is about to deliver a speech at Parliament House in Canberra.

The Year 12 student won a national competition in which students sent in videos of themselves pretending to make their maiden speech as a politician.

Johnson, 17, pledged to do away with negative politics, embrace multiculturalism and abolish inefficient taxes.

"As the son of a Chinese migrant I am a beneficiary of Australia's embracement of multiculturalism," he said. "This also prompted me to enter the competition, to express my gratitude to the nation."

The Winthrop teen hopes to enter Federal politics "when the time is right", after establishing a career as a lawyer or doctor.

He said he was disappointed to miss out on being eligible to vote in next month's Federal election by just a few months.

Another WA student, Jacob Kerspien who is in Year 10 at St Stephen's School, Duncraig, came third. They will give their speeches next Saturday as part of a Parliament House 25th anniversary open day.
