Japanese student bashed, robbed

A 25-year-old Japanese student was bashed in a cowardly attack in Bentley last night.

Shunsuke Takehara, 25, was walking along Bedford Street near Chapman Road about 6.20pm when two people approached him and asked for the time.

One of the pair threatened Mr Takehara with a knife.

When the 25-year-old tried to get away he was struck in the head with an unknown object leaving him with serious cuts to his forehead and a black eye.

The Curtin University English student's backpack containing textbooks, a chocolate bar and some bread was stolen and the offenders left the scene on foot.

Mr Takehara managed to flag down a car on Chapman Road and St John Ambulance paramedics were called.

He was just 200m from his home at the time of the incident.

Mr Takehara said he had been in Perth for three months and despite the initial shock he experienced after the attack, he was still looking forward to spending the rest of his year-long stay in Australia.

Det. Senior Const. Gerard Gibson said it appeared the attack had been random.

"The way that they assaulted the young gentleman is quite distressing," he said.

The main offender is described as being about 18-years-old, but no older than 20-years-old, about 165cm tall, with long dark curly hair, of a slim build and of Aboriginal appearance.

The second offender was wearing all white clothing, about 18-years-old and may have been a female.
