Segway tours along the Perth foreshore are expected in the near future after the Government changed licensing regulations to allow the two-wheeled mode of transport on shared pathways.

Mindful of the potential safety impacts, the Government has limited Segway use to commercial tours which will conduct training, limit speeds to 10kmh and enforce the use of helmets.

Announcing the regulation changes this morning, Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the Government expected the move to give a welcome boost to WA tourism.

“Segways are an innovative way to explore the city and I’m sure they will help visitors and locals alike to enjoy a unique opportunity to better understand and appreciate Perth,” he said.

He said WA would be the second jurisdiction to allow Segway tours after the ACT.

In the first instance, operators would apply to the relevant local government, with State approval also necessary.

David Ford, manager of Segway West, which already operates tours on private property at The Vines and Busselton, said it was looking at setting up a tour along the Perth foreshore as soon as possible.

“We’ve been in negotiation with City of Perth, we’ve also spoken to City of South Perth in regard to segway tours and as soon as we can get it off the ground we’ll be operating,” he said.

Mr Ford said Segway West operated a one-hour twilight tour at the vines for $69.
