Technical hitch hits news anchor

A newsreader, whose rehearsal read was inadvertently put to air, told late-night viewers, "Tonight, I'm going to sound like a drunk".

Canberra newsreader Kerryn Johnston smiled and made light of her stumbles before reading the news, Fairfax Media reports.

Johnston thought she was doing a test run for the 6.30pm live bulletin on WIN last Wednesday but at midnight the bulletin was cued at the wrong point and Johnston's light-hearted banter appeared in lounge rooms around Canberra.

It has appeared subsequently on many more screens via YouTube.

In a statement, Ms Johnston said she was embarrassed by the mistake and that the throwaway "drunk line" was a self-deprecating nod to stumbling over her words.

Her boss, WIN Network's Director of News Stewart Richmond said Johnston's professionalism and high standards meant she had never put a foot wrong.
