Weather warning as storms lash South West

UPDATE 5PM: A cold front to hit WA late tonight and early tomorrow is expected to produce dangerous weather that is only seen once every three to four years in the south west.

The Weather Bureau says winds will exceed 125km/h.

Damage from wild weather overnight was reported in Belmont, Maddington, Applecross and Hamersley.

The State Emergency Service has answered more than 88 calls for help after the bad cold front hit Perth and the South West overnight.

Damage was reported throughout the metropolitan area, with many calls coming from the south eastern suburbs of Perth.

Gosnells and Maddington were the worst hit with more than 30 calls for help.

There were more than 15 reports of damage along Ellamere Retreat in Maddington and a building near the intersection of Great Eastern Highway and Acton Avenue had significant roof damage and emergency crews are working in the area.

A tree fell on a home on Beach Road in Hamersley, between Mitchell Fwy and Wanneroo Road and an apartment block at 760 Canning Highway, Applecross had parts of its roof ripped off.

"More than 80 SES volunteers are attending to major structural damage, making temporary repairs to homes and fixing minor roof damage," a DFES spokeswoman said this morning.

"SES volunteers have been supported by career Fire and Rescue Service and Bush Fire Service firefighters."

A deep low and associated very strong cold front will move over the south west of the State late this evening and early Monday morning, producing a prolonged period of very windy conditions.

The cold front is likely to cause widespread dangerous winds of more than 125km/h that could result in significant damage or destruction to homes and property.

Dangerous winds are likely to develop southwest of a linefrom Perth to Albany between 8pm and 11pm and extend to south of a line from Jurien Bay to Southern Cross to Norseman to Israelite Bay between midnight and 5am tomorrow.

A deep low and associated very strong cold front will move over the south-west of the state late this evening and early Monday.

Dangerous winds are likely to develop south-west of a line from Perth to Albany between 8pm and 11pm and extend to south of a line from

Jurien Bay to Southern Cross to Norseman to Israelite Bay between midnight and 5am Monday.

The windiest conditions for the Perth metropolitan area are expected between 11pm and 5am.

Higher than normal tides may cause flooding of low-lying coastal areas between Perth and Esperance.

The weather systems are likely to cause widespread damaging winds of up to 100km/h that could result in damage to homes and property.

Winds could reach 125km/h in isolated areas and cause significant damage or destruction to homes and property.

Conditions should ease for a period after 2pm today but the severe weather is expected to return about 11pm.
