Saddle up for rodeo at Muster

The best rodeo stock ever used by Kununurra Bushmen’s Rodeo Association is expected to attract more than 2,000 people at this years Kununurra Coomalie Air Rodeo on May 18.

Kununurra Bushmen’s Rodeo Association secretary Sophie Cannon said the prize money of $3000 and good quality rodeo stock would be a draw card for crowds.

“The stock we have this year is of great quality, they’re trained for rodeos and to buck properly,” she said.

Stock will come from stations including Newry, Rosewood and Ruby Plains – as well as a selection provided by Borderline Rodeo’s owner Ben Ratten.

Numbers at the Kununurra Rodeo crowds have risen from between 800 to 1000 two years ago to 1800 last year.

Mrs Cannon said she was certain the record would be broken this year, with more than 2000 expected to flood through the gates.

“We’ve altered the event lay out to cater for more people and added extra entertainment on the night,” she said.

“Huge amounts of interstate crowds will join us on the night to enjoy the entertainment or have a crack at rodeo riding for the prize money.”

Extended areas for viewing, additional parking and toilet facilities are included as well as food stands and children’s entertainment.

A new 'iron man' competition will have punters engage in comical, timed performances in the middle of the ring.

Rolling swags, skulling a warm can of soft drink or eating a cold meat pie are activities Mrs Cannon hints may be included.

“Entrants might have to spin a yarn or woo a bride and pull a girl out of the crowd,” she said.

Riding categories on the night include an open bull ride, second division bull ride, bullock ride, saddle bronc, bareback ride, wiener scruffing and a poddy ride.

Tickets can be purchased now at Kununurra Visitors Centre or at the event. Gates open and first event is at 4pm. After the last buck, live music from Qynn Beardman and entertainment til late.
