Helipad plans on Swan River

The City of Perth wants a permanent helipad in the central business district, potentially in the middle of the Swan River.

The council last night passed a proposal to build a a helipad and invited public expressions of interest for the project.

Councillor James Limnios said the facility was needed to make Perth a global city.

"We can't be a global capital without a helipad," he said.

"There are plenty of billionaires in this city who come here on business who want to be able to get in and out."

The council's preferred site for the helipad is on the Perth foreshore or on a "river- based pontoon", possibly at the end of Governors Avenue.

The council is seeking expressions of interest from the private sector to advance the project.

Perth's first helipad, built in the mid-80s, was on the river foreshore at the eastern end of River- side Drive, now site of the Point Fraser development.

This helipad was moved to make way for the construction of Point Fraser and a temporary facility was set up from 2006 to 2011 within the East Perth redevelopment area.

The licence for the East Perth facility was terminated because of the Waterbank project.
