Backpackers set up illegal camp on Yarra River

A group of backpackers taking prime position along the banks of Melbourne's Yarra River has been told to move on or risk being fined.

The travellers, visiting from overseas and interstate, have set up their illegal camp in a free parking zone at Boathouse Drive.

Dozens of campervans park on the street after 3pm when restrictions are no longer in place.

Camping in a public place is illegal and, if caught, the squatters face fines of up to $250.

Melbourne City Council sent parking officers in this morning and says it has started issuing notices to comply and asking people to move on.

But with spectacular views of the river and a free stay, the squatters say they are not in a hurry to vacate.

Many say they will avoid paying the fines because they simply go back overseas.
