Father rescues toddler from burning house

A South Australian father has described how he rescued his two-year-old daughter from their burning home overnight.

24-year-old Matt Farr and partner Jaime Collins were asleep in their Elizabeth Park house when the fire broke out at around 10:30pm last night.

Ms Collins managed to rescue their two older children, aged four and five however she could not reach their youngest daughter, two-year-old Ashley.

She told ABC: "The bedroom was alight, the bedroom door was half closed and as I pushed it she must have been like on the bed where the fire was and I couldn't see her, couldn't hear her really, I just heard like a little faint cry," she said.

Her mother believes the little girl might have been playing with a cigarette lighter, which set the mattress alight.

Mr Farr managed to get into the room and rescue the toddler. She was suffering serious burns from head to toe and according to reports, her skin was peeling off.

"She's in a critical situation. he has to stay asleep for three weeks because of the pain," Mr Farr told 7News.

She is in a critical condition at Adelaide’s Woman’s and Children’s Hospital.

The blaze spread quickly through the roof of the house, with an estimated damage bill of $200,000.
