Hero police dog attacked

The police dog who helped track down the people accused of murdering Gold Coast officer Damian Leeding, has been badly injured during a raid at Upper Coomera.

It is believed police went to a property after a road rage incident looking for the owner of a car who allegedly had a hand gun.

When police arrived at the property they were confronted by two vicious dogs.

Police Dog Bosun was attacked by the dogs and sustained serious injuries.

Senior Constable Wayne Algie said despite his injuries Bosun would recover.

"We were at a job and the offender's come running out the back and he had a dog following him and the dog's charged in and grabbed him on the leg," Snr Const Algie said.

The dog, believed to be a Amstaff Cross, was locked on Bosun's leg.

A pitbull was also involved.

Officers used capsicum spray then had to taser the animals in order for Bosun to be treated.

Bosun is very special to the police at Coomera. He was the dog that helped find Detective Damian Leeding's alleged killers last year.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Procter said police dogs were equally at risk of injury as officers.

"He's part of the family and it just highlights the dangerous job we have, not only for the officers but for the dogs we have as well.

"We don't believe it was a deliberate act, we just believe these animals were protecting their property."

Police allege they found an assortment of drugs including almost 2kg of cannabis along with hydroponic equipment, two rifles and a collection of snakes during the raid on the property.

Thirty-three-year-old Robin Arundell was arrested. The unemlpoyed father faced court yesterday and was given bail. His dogs though are still locked up at the pound.

The pitbull is a banned breed and could be destroyed. The fate of the other dog rests with police.

"Apart from the dog bite it was a good outcome," Snr Const Algie said.

Bosun will have two weeks off work to recover.
