'Wouldn't celebrate September 11': Parody video slams Australia Day

As 'invasion day' protests take place around the country, some of which turned violent, a parody video using an iconic 2000's piracy video has compared Australia Day to September 11 and other haunting dates.

Backyard barbecues, ice-cold beers and Triple J’s Hottest 100 have all become synonymous with celebrating Australia Day but as the parody video argues, these are things that shouldn't be celebrated on January 26.

The protests coincide with the emergence of the parody video which has slammed Australians for brazenly celebrating the controversial date.

"You wouldn't celebrate September 11, you wouldn't celebrate August 6, Hiroshima, you wouldn't celebrate July 31 (Auschwitz)," the dramatic mock video states.

"Celebrating January 26 is kinda f**ked up... #changethedate."

The video echoes the senitment shared by actors, TV hosts, and politicians who led the charge to “change the date” from January 26.

Meanwhile about 3000 people gathered at Parliament House in Melbourne before the crowd swelled, gathering numbers as it moved to the official Australia Day parade route that had finished half an hour earlier.

"We don't celebrate September 11, we don't celebrate Hiroshima - it's pretty stupid to celebrate today," Michael Polanske told AAP on Thursday.
