Dog rescued from frozen US lake

Rescuers have risked their lives to save a dog after it fell through a frozen lake in Michigan, US.

When firefighters arrived at the lake, the labrador was still barking.

The dog fell through the ice about 100 metres from shore and struggled to climb out of the water.

Three firefighters donned ice rescue suits and tethered themselves to their colleagues on shore to complete the rescue.

The department said staff don't usually risk going out on the ice for other animals - but would do their best for a family pet.

The dog is 14 years old, and was still dealing with some serious health issues as a result of falling in the freezing water, a spokesperson for a local animal rescue organisation said.

The pooch had been reunited with its owner who was "very happy" and taking it to the vet, Michigan Live reported.
