Man found wounded, unconscious on Sydney footpath dies

A man has died after being found wounded and unconscious at the end of a trail of blood on a western Sydney footpath.

Emergency workers were called to John Street, Lidcombe after the man was spotted unconscious on the footpath by two women at 12.35am Monday.

Paramedics tried to revive him but he died at the scene.

Police say the man, who police said was 45 years old, had a wound to his head, and a postmortem examination will be conducted later on Monday to determine his identity and the cause of death.

A trail of blood was found running along Yarram Street where the man's body was found lying under a street light, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The man had a wound to the head and police said they were treating the death as suspicious.

The man is a local resident of the area and his family have yet to be contacted, a police spokesman told press at the scene.

Police established a crime scene with homicide investigating and the dog squad called into to trace the man's final steps.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
