Drunken teen apologises to town after breaking their Christmas tree

One Queensland teen's festive cheer has turned destructive, with his drunken antics leaving his town without a Christmas tree.

The 19-year-old, from Stanthorpe, in the state's south east, has now issued a public apology for climbing the town's tree on a community Facebook page.

"I'd like to make a formal apology for my actions last night, as everyone might know the town Christmas tree was damaged,” he wrote in the post.

“I am aware being intoxicated was no excuse in the incident, I really am sorry I'm part of this town as well and I don't like seeing things get damaged.

“But [nevertheless] i chose to make this silly decision, so I'm sorry Stanthorpe I hope you can forgive me for my actions,” the teen wrote.

However, local police took the matter a little more seriously.

They confirmed to 7 News Online that they have since charged the 19-year-old man with willful damage along with his 24-year-old female accomplice.

Stanthorpe Police Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland confirmed to 7 News online that there was “very clear” CCTV of the incident.

Senior Sergeant Ireland also confirmed that they are reviewing the footage as part of their investigation.

The vision shows the man “climbing up the tree and it buckled,” Senior Sergeant Ireland said.

“Being intoxicated is no excuse in the eyes of the law.”

The man will face Stanthorpe Magistrates Court in the new year.

7 News Online reached out to the 19-year-old accused for comment, but has not heard back

The tree has since been replaced.
