Mates hailed as heroes after pulling woman from burning car

Four friends have been praised for rescuing a young woman who was trapped inside a burning car in Melbourne.

What began as a standard Saturday night for the four mates quickly turned into a dramatic night they will all never forget.

At first the group heard a woman’s screams for help.

“We was walking inside the park and we saw clearly the fire inside the car, we saw like someone smoking,” one of the men told 7 News.

The woman had just finished work at a nearby gentlemen's club when the dangerous fire broke out.

She fell asleep and dropped a cigarette inside the vehicle.

The fire then quickly ignited and she became disorientated and couldn’t exit the vehicle.

“When I knocked on the window I heard some noise inside like someone said, "help me, help me"," one of the men told 7 News.

With the terrified 19-year-old helplessly trapped inside the car the men immediately sprung into action.

“My other friend just found some wood on the back floor to break the back window and when he broke the back window the fire like blew up on him,” one of the men told 7 News.

“One of them jumped in the front window. He started like kicking it to open it but there was a small hole and she tried to put her head outside and was breathing so hard”.

One of the brave men, Mohammed, cut his hand while trying to drag the woman out of the passenger seat.

Despite the minor injuries and sudden end to their night the humble heroes have said they would do it all over again, however.

“We’re feeling so happy because we save this woman’s life,” one of the men told 7 News.

Police say it was extremely lucky the men were in the right place at the right time because if they had left their party any later the woman’s injuries could have been fatal.

“They said like if we take like longer than like two minutes maybe she pass away,” one of the men told 7 News.

The woman was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.
