Two men charged over carjacking that saw woman jump on bonnet
Two men have been charged over a brazen carjacking that saw a passerby jump onto a four-wheel-drive's bonnet in a bid to save a baby girl trapped inside.
It is alleged two men got into a four-wheel-drive outside a school in Coburg on Tuesday afternoon and started to drive off, without realising the mother's six-month-old child Amira was strapped into the back seat.
Witness Eloca Arafe, who is a friend of Amira's mother, said she saw the situation unfold and her "motherly instincts kicked in" as she jumped on the moving vehicle.
Luckily the vehicle was found dumped a short time later with Amira found "safe and well" inside.
In a statement, police confirmed two men - a 44-year-old Hadfield man and a 24-year-old Coburg man - had been arrested and charged on Friday.
The Coburg man has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and child stealing. He is set to face a bail hearing on Friday night.
The 44-year-old man, who has already been released on bail, is facing a theft of motor vehicle charge.
He will next appear in court on February 21, 2017.
