Man shot in face, drives himself to friend's house, calls ambulance

A man who was left with a gaping wound to his face after being shot with a rifle managed to drive himself to a friend's house nearby and call for an ambulance.

The 29-year-old man was left with left with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries after he was shot in the face in what police say is a targeted attack in Wollongong.

Police believe the man, who rang emergency services around 2.30pm on Wednesday, was attacked in Joanne St, Woonona but managed to get in his car and drive to a friend's house at nearby Mountain Avenue.

From there he called an ambulance and was airlifted to hospital in Sydney where he underwent emergency facial surgery.

He is believed to currently be in a serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident but they believe the shooting was a targeted attack.

The gunman remains on the loose and is considered armed and dangerous.
